wikiHard : How to install Kali Linux on USB
Boot and install Kali from a USB key is our preferred method. To accomplish this, we must first create an ISO image on a USB key. If you want to add persistence with the installation, please read this entire document.Prepare the USB key
- Download Kali Linux.
- If Windows is used, download "Win32 Disk Imager".
- No additional software is required for the systems * nix.
- A USB (minimum capacity of 2Go)

Creation from a Windows system
- Plug your USB stick into your Windows computer and run start "Win32 Disk Imager".
- Choose the image, ISO, Kali file and make sure that the USB key that will be used is correct.

- Once the process is complete, eject the key to the system properly. You can now start Kali Linux from your USB key.
Creating from a Linux system
Create a USB key that will start Kali Linux is very simple in a Linux environment. Once you have downloaded the image, use the "dd" command to copy the files on your device.warning : even if this process is easy, you can easily destroy partitions of arbitrarily with the "dd" tool if you don't know what you're doing. Now, consider yourself warned.
- Plug the key into your system.
- Check the path to the key using the command 'dmesg'.
- Make the application of the Kali image on your USB key (carefully!):
dd if=kali.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=512k
It's that simple! Now you can start from your key and access the environment Kali Linux and install it on disk.
Persistence in your USB key
Add to persistence (the ability to back up files and changes after reboot) your Kali Linux image can be very useful in certain occasions. 5. Once completed, use the "mount" command to make available your persistence USB like this partition :>
mkdir /mnt/usb
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/usb
echo "/ union" >> /mnt/usb/persistence.conf
umount /mnt/usb
6. Plug the USB key into your system. Make sure that the necessary adjustments are made so that the system boots from the key. When Kali Linux menu on your screen, select "Live Boot" but do not press 'Enter', press the 'Tab' key. This will allow you to add your persistence partition to the boot settings. Simply add "persistence" whenever you wish to have available.
