Click on start  >  run (or Windows key + R)  >  type "cmd"  >  type Chkdsk /f F: (F: being the letter of your key)  >  type 'Y' If prompted

How to install Kali Linux on USB drive

wikiHard : How to install Kali Linux on USB

Boot and install Kali from a USB key is our preferred method. To accomplish this, we must first create an ISO image on a USB key. If you want to add persistence with the installation, please read this entire document.

Prepare the USB key

  1. Download Kali Linux.
  2. If Windows is used, download "Win32 Disk Imager".
  3. No additional software is required for the systems * nix.
  4. A USB (minimum capacity of 2Go)

Installation procedure Kali Linux on USB key

Creation from a Windows system

  • Plug your USB stick into your Windows computer and run start "Win32 Disk Imager".
  • Choose the image, ISO, Kali file and make sure that the USB key that will be used is correct.

  • Once the process is complete, eject the key to the system properly. You can now start Kali Linux from your USB key.

Creating from a Linux system

Create a USB key that will start Kali Linux is very simple in a Linux environment. Once you have downloaded the image, use the "dd" command to copy the files on your device.

warning : even if this process is easy, you can easily destroy partitions of arbitrarily with the "dd" tool if you don't know what you're doing. Now, consider yourself warned.

  1. Plug the key into your system.
  2. Check the path to the key using the command 'dmesg'.
  3. Make the application of the Kali image on your USB key (carefully!):
dd if=kali.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=512k

It's that simple! Now you can start from your key and access the environment Kali Linux and install it on disk.

Persistence in your USB key

Add to persistence (the ability to back up files and changes after reboot) your Kali Linux image can be very useful in certain occasions. Our example will assume your USB stick is mounted on / dev / sdb. With a key persistence with greater capcité necessary.

1. Apply the image Kali Linux on your USB key as described above with the tool "dd".
2. Create and format additional partitions on the key. Our example we will use "gparted" like this:

 gparted /dev/sdb

3. The layout of your partitions would look like this:

4. Proceed to format the new partition. Our example will use the available space. Make sure you name the label "persistence" and format with the ext4 file system.

5. Once completed, use the "mount" command to make available your persistence USB like this partition :>

mkdir /mnt/usb
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/usb
echo "/ union" >> /mnt/usb/persistence.conf
umount /mnt/usb

6. Plug the USB key into your system. Make sure that the necessary adjustments are made so that the system boots from the key. When Kali Linux menu on your screen, select "Live Boot" but do not press 'Enter', press the 'Tab' key. This will allow you to add your persistence partition to the boot settings. Simply add "persistence" whenever you wish to have available.

No problem yet, simply go through the Windows registry.
To do this, press at the same time Windows and R. In the field that appears, type regedit and confirm.

Then click the OK button to confirm. Finally, quit Registry Editor and restart the computer.
There is another solution which allows to format a USB key non-writeable and that works fine under Windows 7.8 and Windows 10. This solution is based on the Windows Diskpart utility.
DiskPart is a small command-line utility that allows the management of the disks. It is integrated with the majority of Windows: XP, Seven, Win 8 and 10.
To use it, please follow these steps:
First run a command prompt by using the Windows key and R, typing cmd and then validating by the Enter key.

  • Then type diskpart and confirm.

  • Select the key by typing select disk X, or X is the number that you have found, and validate.
